Pint-sized beauty on the go

Its become apparent to me recently that one of my personal unconscious driving decisions when it comes to choosing beauty products is the availability of travel sizes.

In a previous blog I recently mentioned that one of my requirements for going on holiday is that the accommodation needs to be at least as comfortable as my own home (I ask for simple things!). Well, similarly, I’m 100% not negotiable on keeping up my day-to-day beauty routine when I’m travelling.

Yes, I could buy those cheap, clear plastic containers from Clicks and decant products. I used to do that in a previous lifetime but that’s just not pretty. That & I’m no longer a student – I’d like to think that I’ve graduated from that to a better place. I’m a snob like that. At any rate, I’d end up finding myself sniffing each container trying to decipher my foot cream from my face cream. Not fun. Before that I used to travel with full sized products. Even less fun.

Here are a couple of my favourites I took on a recent (awesome!) vacation:

The great thing is that is you can refill these (well most) at home when they run out and no more overweight luggage bills (what’s the deal with that 20kg limit anyway?)!

In retrospect I’ve actually made a bit of a hobby of collecting travel sizes so much so that I don’t need to buy for a while. There are plenty around if you keep your eyes peeled….

  • Ask for samples at various counters. Keep asking, they do have – you just need to convince them to share. This is a good way (in fact a must!) to trial before you splurge on a full size.
  • Magazines often have freebies pre-packaged (mind the cheap and nasty ones though) – that’s if mine doesn’t get swiped at the post office first (grrr!)
  • Goodie bags at events can be a great treat although some goodie bags should just be called, well, bags.
  • Some brands sell a travel kit with a range of your favourites nicely bundled in a cute bag. Look out for these offers especially around event days like Mothers Day, Xmas etc – makes for a great gift too.
  • Demo girls – ok I’m pretty sure there’s a more pc word out there but they’re the cuties in malls handing out free stuff. Accost them.
  • Gift with purchase (GWP) – you’ve seen this a million times at department stores with houses like Clinique, Estee Lauder etc – e.g. if you buy 2 products (one being a treatment/moisturiser/foundation etc.) you’ll get a gift set valued at Rx free – I love these offers – makes me feel like I’m getting more bank for my buck since cosmetics etc. can be sooo expensive!

An innovative way to trial new beauty products is the recent phenomenon of monthly “beauty box” subscriptions available. There are a number of brands available that do this but the premise is the same: for a set amount per month (between R100 & R130) you get sent a box of various beauty items (mostly premium brands) to trial and enjoy. The retail value of the items is far higher than what you would have paid for via your subscription. Mostly the items are travel size; sometimes a bit more generous and occasionally you could even get a full size product.

I love this concept (why didn’t I think of this?!) & it’s a great way to try new things and keep abreast of new launches etc. If you’re not convinced, have a look on the sites below what their previous boxes have consisted of – prepare to drool!

Here are some to try:

I’ve been resisting temptation to try one of these out, please tell me if you have and what you’ve loved/loathed about them.
