Length check confusion

I’ve been saying for a while now that the 1 year anniversary of my big chop (BC) is coming and well, it’s here.

Enter my dilemma.

In the weeks & months running up to my anni I knew exactly what I was going to do. I was going to do a length check by getting a blow dry in salon (I don’t have the energy, really!). No flat ironing (let’s not get crazy here), just the blow dry. I even have an appointment booked. The plan was to just wear it straight for a day or maybe two & then go right back to my beloved curls.

How crazy is this length check? Source

I wanted to do this for a couple of reasons:

  1. This point should be # 1, 2 & 3: To motivate myself to keep going on this natural journey by seeing how long my hair really is under all these kinks & curls.

In the run up to my anni I recently had dinner with Carice (hair columnist for Destiny Magazine & Shimmer by Motions), Aisha (My fro & I), Kavuli (Good Hair Diaries) and Tendayi (Africanhairblog) – dream dinner date right?!

Anyway we got to chatting & I felt the certainty of my plans fizzle away as the evening went on.

Enter my current indecision.

We chatted about heat damage & “heat trained hair” (when hair just loses it natural curl over time due to heat). None of this was news to me but the heart palpitations kicked in. Imagine losing a year’s growth, a year’s hard work. My hair has only just got enough length now for me to start doing a couple of interesting things with it. I. Cannot. Go. Back. I won’t. Memories of my battle trying to go curly with relaxed hair (pre my BC) came flooding back…

Aisha mentioned she’d blow dried her fro a couple of times & had no issues at all. Of course there ways to minimise the risk with temperature settings, heat protective sprays etc. Hope!

I don’t know a natural who thinks that their hair grows fast enough & I’m no exception. Truth be told not only naturals feel this way and it’s a common myth that ethnic hair doesn’t grow. Of course I can see the progress when I look at pics over the months but darn it, I just wanted a little bit of excitement!

I’m now just pass the 1 year mark & this indecision needs to end soon… Your thoughts are welcome needed!

Be kind to your hair!
