Sunday Music Sessions at The Maslow

If you’re in Jozi & you haven’t heard about The Maslow by now which rock have you been living under? This swanky new business hotel is on the corner of Grayston & Rivonia, where one of their older properties used to be. I didn’t think we’d have a chance to try it out so soon so I was too happy when the hubby announced he’d booked us in for Sunday lunch (i.e. I was off the hook for the day’s cooking) after being at a conference there all week.

We arrived early (this is me we’re talking about!) & settled into drinks at the Lacuna Bar. I sipped on a Bashew’s ginger beer – didn’t know they were still around, such a blast from the past having grown up in Cape Town. The setting is super relaxed and both the restaurant & bar open up onto the garden & pool so you have that inside/outside feel. What I didn’t know is that we were there for The Maslow’s inaugural Sunday Music Session where on Sunday afternoons they now offer a 3 course set menu while you relax to live entertainment.

I love the dark interior & the touches are beautiful

We listened to these smooth sounds all afternoon

For starters we shared the Lacuna Platter.

We moved over to Lacuna Bistro & prepared to feast. It may not look substantial but the starter was quite a bit of food. We made some tweaks (which they had no problem with) but the full platter would consist of: meatballs in spiced tomato sauce, ham & pea croquettes, potted duck confit, greek salad, fried calamari, tomato mozzarella bruschetta & babaganoush (egg-plant pate) with garlic pita bread.

Lacuna Bistro’s Executive Chef Dallas Orr is infamous from his days at The Table Bay Hotel, so we knew we were in for a treat & watched keenly as we had a good view to the kitchen.

For mains, I opted for the kingklip. It came with crushed Provençale potatoes, parsley puree & lemon butter sauce.

Hubby of course went straight for the red meat & tucked into the braised shoulder of lamb, oven potatoes, root vegetables & minted braising gravy. He thought it was a tad overcooked but nearly licked the plate anyway…

Lust

  • At all levels of staff that we interacted with the service experience was really good. We were checked on plenty without it being overbearing & when we had questions about the menu the waitress was more than happy to find out the info we wanted from the chef.

Love

  • The food was really good, tasty & well presented.

Loathe

  • Nothing at all

There was no space for dessert, as if that would stop us. I had the assorted ice creams & sorbet  (vanilla, strawberry & watermelon) & later found out the bowl was edible!

photohHe went for the Lacuna trifle & I couldn’t help squeezing in a pose 🙂

Need to know

  • The Sunday Music Sessions set menu costs R350 per person & includes a glass of sparkling wine or Appletizer. You have a choice (of 3) for your main meal & dessert.
  • The meat is sourced from Karaan beef, so its halaal

If I ran the place

  • I wouldn’t change a thing

Go hungry & with lots of time to spare, you’ll want pace yourself between courses…
