As much as I recently wrote this RIP my dear Blackberry post, our love-hate relationship continues (I’m clingy & she likes to be needed so it works). What’s also continued is the freezing & the subsequent hard reboots needed 3/4 times a day. It’s become my life.
Yesterday I was in Sandton City with some time to kill & though I’d seen them plenty before, I noticed the Blackberry Buddies stand again & this time curiously checked it out.
The consultant was really helpful (& sympathetic as I listed the device’s issues) . I handed over my phone & he let me know that I needed a software upgrade as I was on version 7.0 & should be on 7.1 (who knew). Some of the benefits of the upgrade I was told included:
- being able to use the device as a wi-fi hotspot (additional charges outside of BIS apply)
- battery life saving mode feature(yes please!)
Although I’m not sure that they’re all available in SA, I did some research & found this comprehensive list of features of the new 7.1 software.
The software upgrade was done on the spot in about 15/20 minutes while I waited (make sure you know your Blackberry App World password before you start). All my contacts (phonebook & BBM), sms’s & media files stayed in tact, only apps had to be downloaded again.
As I type this post it hasn’t even been 12 hours since I’ve had the software upgrade, so I don’t want to jinx it, but I haven’t had to reboot my 9900 in all this time & given the way things have been going lately, that’s a new record for me! Fingers crossed!
The stand has been in Sandton City since August 2012 & looks set to stay till September 2013. They’re in the major mall in every province namely Menlyn, Mimosa (that’s in Bloem, I was also confused), Gateway & Canal Walk. Some of the other services offered include email setup, device switches, parental control, tips & tricks (which I’m keen to go back for) & general technical assistance. All of theses services are free.
If you have a BB with issues, this is worth checking out – you certainly have nothing to lose!
