RIP Marion and Lindie

On the 15th of March 2013, upscale South African brand Marion and Lindie posted the following on their Facebook fan page:

“We regret to announce that MARION AND LINDIE stores are closing and MARION AND LINDIE apparel will no longer be available. There will be a closing down sale at the Sandton City and Menlyn Park MARION AND LINDIE stores from Friday 15 March. Thank you for your loyal support of the MARION AND LINDIE brand.”

Their fans lamented over the news with 39 comments following all expressing their sadness & wanting to know why. By the time that post went up their Waterfront & Cavendish Square branches, both in Cape Town were already closed.

Founders Lindie Grenfell and Marion Reed joined forces in the late 90’s to bring us wearable, contemporary garments in high quality fabrics. Their success catapulted from their initial studio joining The House of Busby (The holding company for Nine West, Guess, Aldo, Mango etc.) in 2001 & saw Danica Lepen at the design helm in 2010. Looking in, things looked good as the brand blossomed to 4 stores nationwide as well as being stocked by selected Edgars & Stuttafords making it more accessible via credit.

Known initially for occasion wear, in August 2011 they launched a leisure wear range under Danica’s clock in keeping with their outlook of women looking and feeling great with ease, this time even while traveling or just lounging around.

Personally I have around 12 timeless Marion and Lindie pieces on my closet (2 still have the labels attached but that’s another story for another day!). Some of these pieces I’ve happily loaned out to friends on request. I don’t consider myself a fashion slave by any means but it was near impossible to walk by the store without popping in. Their garments were classic but often had interesting unexpected details that I really enjoyed & I always saw a purchase from them as an investment piece. Of course, Marion & Lindie was a boutique with a sophisticated shopping experience that has a price tag of its own but compared to some local designers’ pricing I always thought theirs was fair & hardly offensive.

Their website has already been shut down & their Twitter account wasn’t ever very active.

I will certainly treasure the items that I have in my closet even more now. Marion & Lindie you will be missed!

W

xoxo
