Luminance launches with a pop-up store in Hyde Park

I want to say that curiosity got the better of me & so I decided to have a peek at the Luminance pop-up store, because you know, I was in the area. However, when the hubby piped up with his usual “so what do you want to do this weekend?” on Saturday morning instead of my usual “oh anything, I’m easy” (which is a lie by the way if you’re a man reading this!) I expressly stated that we needed to go by Hyde Park (my favourite Jozi mall by the way) to check out Khanyi Dhlomo’s newly launched Luminance pop-up store.

Enter the Luminance pop-up store…

The Luminance pop-up store opened its (rather grand!) doors last week & will trade until their fully fledged 700 square meter store is ready which will be the 17th July 2013. In case you’re wondering where in the mall that (massive!) store will be its going to be in the spot where Nedbank is now. It promises to be something quite different, even sporting its own coffee shop (I wonder which brand they’ll serve!) – the perfect spot to park off your husband while you get on with it! Yes, Khanyi really has thought of everything

I’m really not sure where to start because this store is quite unlike anything we’ve seen in SA before. In a previous post there are some thoughts from Khanyi & her business partner Judy Dlamini about what we can expect. Khanyi’s mom, Venetia Dhlomo is also part of this luxury retail venture. I’ll let you have it in their own words…

“Luminance is an accessible luxury & contemporary fashion and lifestyle retail concept store for consumers who covet world-class quality and beauty.”

Khanyi has been quoted as saying that Luminance (named after her own name, Khanyisile, meaning light) has been a long time coming.  Thinking about the road she’s paved up to this point it would seem as if the stars have lined up for her to bring us what is Luminance today. She earned her stripes in media from the age of 20 when we 1st got to meet her as a news reader. She’s got a Harvard MBA & runs SA’s only business oriented magazine for Black women while she’s a non-executive director of fashion retailer Foschini. She also spent 3 years living in Paris working for SA tourism promoting our country (what she called a dream job). Today, she’s the MD & founding editor of Ndalo media & Destiny magazine respectively. The latter, will no doubt be a key vehicle in building the Luminance brand.

A taste of some of the brands you can expect. Now catch your breath…

And there’s actually more brands coming, you can see a comprehensive list here. Amongst these coveted brands we can also look forward to seeing the best of our own local designers like David Tlale, Gavin Rajah, Kluk CGDT, Stoned Cherrie and Marianne Fassler. I love that there’ll be a local flair, as Khanyi put it, “to celebrate the best of Africa, with the best of the world”. There is a clear recognition of a need to support local trade & I’m really happy to see Luminance take our talent on this journey with them.

Then there’s also Luminance Private Label to look forward to, aimed  more at corporate wear, which promises to come in at an affordable price point and for which they are already taking pre orders.

The store is immaculately laid out. You want to touch & feel everything

Considering this pop-up store will only be around for 3 months they have gone to enormous lengths to make it the opulent show case that it is. The shop fittings are exquisite & everything about the store says luxury at every turn. I couldn’t help but overhear that one of the shop assistants joined from the Louis Vuitton store and greeted a customer by name. Which brings me to service. When I was there, I didn’t announce myself as a blogger but just that I wanted to have a look around (translation I’m not here to buy anything) which they welcomed warmly.

Here’s a look at a handful of items that caught my eye…

Since last week’s launch & until early June 2013 Luminance has been & will be on the road hosting a series of trunk shows for customers outside of Jozi (& those in Botswana) to get a taste of what they’re about. As part of the trunk show, you are able to book a personal styling appointment at your convenience (up to 7pm!).

For now the focus is ladies wear with some kids wear in the mix too but when asked, they haven’t ruled out menswear down the line. Post the 17th July Hyde Park store opening, further stores are planned around the rest of SA & the continent over the next few years an there’s also an online store to look forward to as soon as November 2013.

A girl can dream right?

W

xoxo
