The crois-nut craze hits Jozi

Belle’s Patisserie needs no introduction but several lunches later, I’m really not sure why I haven’t blogged about them before. They supply most of Jozi’s coffee shops and restaurants (well the good ones) with their cakes and confectionery. Chances are if you live in Gauteng, you’ve had Belle’s before.

They’ve had a teaser going all week that that really didn’t have me overly intrigued, it went something like this…

I didn’t pay much attention, I mean what can a patisserie really be “launching” I thought. But by the time I was climbing in my car driving there yesterday just a few hours into the reveal, with all the excitement online, I knew I had to get some in my tummy!

The crois-nut is exactly as you’ve guessed – they’ve crossed a croissant (my favourite pastry of all time) with a doughnut (my childhood favourite) and it’s heavenly. At first glance it doesn’t look any different to a doughnut but when you sink you teeth in and it melts crumbles on your tongue, you’ll know exactly what I mean. Born in New York (called the cronut there) its super light and fluffy and owner Linda Lipschitz tells me it took her chef 2 months of trial and error to get it just right.

There are a few flavours :

– plain (dusted with icing sugar)

– chocolate (with chocolate chip)

– strawberry and jam (with rose-water)

– custard

Hands down the plain is my favourite (I like my croissants plain too, I’m boring classic like that). Hubby loved the custard one as I knew he would (I don’t eat baked custard or fruit) while the jam one was too sweet for me (I scooped most of the filling out). The chocolate is pretty good too, not too many chocolate chips in the dough so just sweet enough. I had a brain wave afterwards to re heat them in the oven (only the plain one obviously) so I’ll try that on the next batch for sure…

Orders were limited to 2 per customer for the launch day yesterday and they weren’t taking any pre orders – I understand why. By the time I got there late afternoon, they’d sold over 300 and just had a few dozen left to go.

At R25 a piece I won’t be indulging too often – my thighs can’t afford it either.
