Sel et Poivre

I visited Sel et Poivre [sell] [e] [pwa:vr] (translated meaning salt & pepper) a little while ago for a bit of a celebratory night out & if I’m honest the only reason it’s taken this long to get the review out is because I was expecting more.

A  French fine dining restaurant at the 4 star Quatermain Boutique Hotel in Morningside, Sel et Poivre is headed up by the famous Belgian Chef Coco Reinarhz who we even managed to catch a glimpse of on the evening (he was super friendly & waved back!).

PS apologies for the picture quality, forgot my camera at home and the lighting was low.

Lust

  • nothing

Love

  • we were well looked after on the night – the service was definitely on point.

Loathe

  • not their fault but my biggest gripe of the evening was a raucous corporate group of a dozen + who’d had a tad too much to drink.
  • maybe because it was just us and this large group for the bulk of the night, it just felt like the place lacked ambience.

Need to know

  • the menu is seasonal and I’m told changes often – it’s available online (wish all restaurants would do this).

If I ran the place

Let me be clear that the food wasn’t bad, it was just ok & I just expected a lot more of this award-winning restaurant. Nothing I had was particularly impressive or interesting and for the price tag that the evening came at a left feeling a bit let down. This could have been a meal I’d eaten just about any where – it just wasn’t memorable. Would I go back? Maybe, but not in a hurry. The hotel looked beautiful, I’d love to see it in the day time and have another look around, especially the courtyard.
