High Tea at The Saxon gets a make over

I know what you’re thinking – there was nothing wrong with High Tea at The Saxon right? I’ve been several times and even had one there for my kitchen tea when I got married and always thought it was pretty perfect. Well it’s gotten even better if you can imagine that…

We were invited to High Tea at the Piano Lounge which leads out onto The Terrace, where I’m used to having it served. The invite’s dress code read hats, pearls and summer glamour – yes please! The menu’s had an update but still has a great balance of sweet and savoury. I arrived a little hungry having skipped breakfast in a rush and got right into the savoury bit.

Pastry Chef Minette Smith also came out to chat to us (I love it when chef’s come out of the kitchen) about what went into the feast we had ahead of us. Every single bite size piece that was laid out looked like a work of art and the staff were on hand to tell us exactly what was what before we devoured it. The Saxon is all about details & sometimes unexpected details like the gold leaf (imported from France!) on the strawberry tartlets – just beautiful! As much as they’ve kept up with foodie trends offering cake pops  & macarons, the classics like chocolate eclairs and carrot cake aren’t forgotten either…

It was also my first introduction to the high-quality loose tea by Yswara that I’d seen around a lot, especially at their store in Hyde Park. We got quite an education in tea & Yswara has over 27 blends/flavours available and all of the ingredients come from the African continent.

Quite a breath taking sight to walk into…

I also got to meet the lovely Niqiyah Mayet who blogs at www.niqi.co.za . Swadee (LOVED her dress & head wrap) was our tea sommelier…

To sum up the afternoon, a Joburg classic just got even better!

High Tea is served from Tuesday to Saturday, R395.00 per person.

To book the High Tea, please call +27 (0)11 292 6000 or email reservations@saxon.co.za. More info is available on The Saxon’s website.
