Your hair deserves satin!

I got my Dear Deer pillow case from The Spa Shop a beautiful soft grey (R120)…

If you’re a natural it won’t be news that sleeping on a satin pillow case (i.e. vs. a cotton or polycotton one) is nothing less than a cardinal rule – one that I neglected for a really long time. Truth be told as my hair gets longer (which is one of my key hair goals) I’ve been able to ‘get away’ with less and less (I am even shampooing & conditioning in sections now but more on that in another post). But this post isn’t just for naturalistas, a satin pillow case can help improve anyone’s hair condition especially if you have dry or frizzy hair, so do read on…

But wait. Why is sleeping on cotton bad (& yes, that includes the percale 500 thread count stuff as well)?

  1. Cotton is highly absorbent and draws moisture away from not just hair, but skin too.
  2. Cotton’s texture is much rougher than satin (obviously) so as you toss and turn during the night, satin provides a smooth base for your hair that’s gentle to your cuticle.

Now let me confess that as much as I knew all of the above, I honestly haven’t made a concerted effort to find satin pillow cases, so when I saw one online at The Spa Shop I obviously had to have it and they kindly sent a sample to test drive sleep. Of course the other option vs. a satin pillow case is a sleeping with a satin scarf, so this gave me a different option to still be able to take care of my hair while I sleep without wearing a sexy doek to bed 🙂

Lust

  • Dear Deer’s satin pillow case really feels luxurious, thick, of great quality & beautiful to the touch. I have no doubt this is really actual satin. I’ve seen so many ‘satin bonnets’ and ‘satin scarves’ that are not satin at all. They’re actually just some kind of smooth faux satin/silk material that’s probably a mix of a few fabrics. This really annoys me. Don’t call something satin if it’s not satin!

Love

  • It’s a perfect fit & has a large ‘lip’ on the inside so the pillow doesn’t slide out (don’t you hate it when that happens?!)
  • I found the Dear Deer pillow case (vs. my usual satin scarf option) good for evenings I had washed my hair & it was still slightly damp. Usually by the morning if I’d worn a satin scarf, some 8 hours later my hair would still be damp but with a satin pillow case it has a chance to air dry through the night.
  • Each pillow slip arrives beautifully gift wrapped which is a nice unexpected touch

Loathe

  • Seven colours is plenty but I wish they had chocolate-brown, beige & baby blue to fit in with my bedroom linen…

Need to know

  • As expected with all delicate fabrics it needs to be hand washed (it washes well, I tried it, keeps shape & size) and can’t be tumble dried.

If I ran the brand

  • I’d keep the current range and add a range that had an edge/border if you know what I mean so that it can fit into the rest of my linen seamlessly.

I can’t say that my hair had instant moisture (I usually sleep with a satin scarf religiously anyway) but I will say it was great to be able to head to bed with my hair ‘out’ for a change.  And on the skin benefits I don’t have dry skin but I had way less sleep lines than I usually do & they were less deep & they faded quicker than normal too.  These days I even drag my satin pillow to the couch to watch TV – my scatter cushion isn’t good enough anymore! Having one satin pillow case isn’t practical for washing so I’m going to get one or two more…

Be kind to your hair!
