Design Essentials Coconut & Monoi

No complaints when some more Design Essentials came across my desk recently. I liked using their naturals range a couple of months back so I was hoping that their Coconut Monoi range would show my fro some love too.

I got sent 5 products from the Coconut & Monoi range (left to right):

  • Deep Moisture Milk Crème (118ml) R196.70
  • Intense Shine Oil Mist (118ml) R196.80
  • Coconut Water Curl Refresher (266ml) R184
  • Deep Moisture Oil Treatment (118ml) R184
  • Deep Moisture Milk Souffle (355ml) R196.80

As you can tell the range is mostly focused on styling/after care products and we’ll be seeing 5 of the 8 products in the line up on SA shelves.

I tried out the Deep Moisture Milk Souffle & Coconut & Monoi Water Curl Refresher & here’s what I thought…

Firstly everything smells edible & dreamy so let me just say that upfront so I don’t have to repeat it. It’s quite a slight smell, not overpowering at all. You definitely get the coconut vibes as soon as the product hits your nose and its coupled with a sweetness – and that’s the monoi. I actually looked up monoi as I’d definitely heard of monoi oil before but couldn’t exactly describe it. According to Wikipedia “Monoï oil is an infused perfume-oil made from soaking the petals of Tahitian gardenias (best known as Tiaré flowers) in coconut oil. Monoï is widely used among French Polynesians as a skin and hair softener”. Also, products are free of all the usual nasties (& a few more I hadn’t heard of) and are cruelty free too.

Coconut Water Curl Refresher

refresher-182x464

The directions say this is good to be used on wet or dry hair, applied from roots to tips. I know my hair well, so I stuck to wet hair. I initially used it after washing & deep conditioning on damp hair  – which gave me the best results (ito curl formation & volume). A couple days later (like day 3 & then day 5) I used it again, but I first wet my hair with plain water in a spritz bottle & then used the curl refresher.

Lust

  • It’s light and not greasy at all – won’t leave any oil on your hands or dripping down onto your clothes like a regular homemade spritz would.

Love

  • I love spray bottles because I’m always in a hurry & it allows me to apply products quite evenly with out having to section. I may/may not have used this sitting in traffic one day when I was very late – its great for being on the go.

Design Essentials Coconut & Monoi Deep Moisture Milk Souffle

souffle-3-358x464

The directions say to apply the soufflé generously to damp curls & massage thoroughly. I strongly recommend taking the time to section when you apply this – you’ll use less product & get a better performance from it since you’re coating almost every single strand of hair. They also say that for extra thick/course hair (that’s me!) you can finish this off with the deep moisture oil

Lust

  • there’s no “crunch” or residue left on the hair at all. This is a biggie for me. I don’t do crunchy & its a bug bear for me with so many styling produts

Love

  • In addition to all the good stuff already mentioned it also contains our beloved shea butter
  • I liked that it left my fro with a slight “wet” look but stil completely touchable (& it totally moved in the wind!) but with less fuzziness (i.e. frizz) in my usual trouble spots

If you’ve read my reviews before you’ll know that ‘ve left the “loathe” off so far. Its not really a loathe per se but the level of moisture each product gives its light to medium & I’d have liked a bit more personally. You can use 2 together if your hair is thirsty (like the soufflé & oil treatment as mentioned above) and you’ll be good. After about a week to 10 days of regular use I could also feel my hair’s moisture improving so consistency is key.

Here’s the final look on wash day once my fro dried (this was practically at sunset!)
