As soon as I saw this video online I knew I was going to share it here.
Just a few days later someone sent it to me as well & I took that as a sign that I really had to…
I’m not writing this post because Spring/Summer is coming but because this is something I took for granted until my 20’s. I didn’t ever wear sun protection except for the few days a year I spent
laying baking on the beach all day long. You know, because in my mind, there obviously was no sun on walking to/from school, in the garden/park or on campus. It just didn’t occur to me at all.
Sunscreen was for those poor pale Nicole Kidman type White girls who went red instead of tanning. When I look back at pics growing up now I can see how constantly tanned/burnt I was & in the last 10 years I’m at least 2-3 shades lighter just from wearing a moisturiser with SPF everyday (Winter & duvet days included!).
We all laugh at the “black don’t crack” jokes. I’m not saying our melanin doesn’t help but heck I want to age well & be healthy too. I’m thinking like Phylicia Rashad (66), Lisa Bonet (from the Cosby Show – she’s 47 – now I feel old!) & of course, Iman (59!).
So yeah this is a combination of health & vanity. And then suddenly it affects someone you actually know & it’s very real. As in someone I know had to get a tumour-cut-out-of-their-face-&-have chemo/radiation real.
I realise I’m preaching to the converted here. Slap that stuff on!
