Frugal Alert: The Entertainer’s back & better!
I’ve never made a secret of being a cheapskate. I mean, I like love nice things & especially trying new things but not so much the outlay & risk that goes with it.
When I met The Entertainer it just felt like they got me. In their own words, in a nutshell they’re about:
“Unbeatable value everywhere we go. Buy One Get One Free Offers to the best restaurants, activities & attractions across 40 destinations throughout the Middle East, Africa & Asia”.
They started in Dubai & have grown to dozens of other cities since, with Cape Town launching in 2013, Joburg last year & this year sees the addition of Durban.
As soon as January 1st hit I got onto the app to see what the new Jozi offers looked like & I was really pleased to see they’ve added some top notch establishments who don’t need any introduction…
And while it might look that way, it’s not just food. There’s also massages, personal training, entry into kiddies play venues, theatre productions, manis/pedis (take my word for it – there’s LOTS of stuff ok?!). In fact, there’s over 1000 buy one get one free offers for Jozi this year AND it includes Pretoria as well. In addition you receive The Entertainer Travel 2015 FREE with purchase of The Entertainer Joburg 2015 product (over 250 hotel offers throughout Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia & Indian Ocean). For perspective, if you had to use every offer in The Joburg Entertainer app (yes, I know you wouldn’t but stick with me here) there’d be over R800 000 savings.
This will be my second year partnering with The Entertainer and I still believe firmly that every single person living in a city where they operate need The Entertainer in their life. Seriously, you’re just wasting money otherwise!
Have a look at the savings I bagged last year:
If you consider that the app/book costs R495, I still saved over R2000!
This year the cost is the same at R495 but there is an offer running that closes tomorrow 31st January (sorry I should have told y’all sooner!) you can get up to 20% off, so R345.
PS if you prefer the hardcopy book, that’s available too at the same price (normally R495, but R395 on the current offer above & free delivery). The offers are exactly the same – it’s your preference. I strongly recommend the app though – I bought the Cape Town book last year & it’s thick & heavy (read: p-a-c-k-e-d with offers) but no fun to lug around – but hey, that’s just me!
All the T’s & C’s are here but the main thing you need to know is that offers are valid till the end of 2015 ( so no pressure!) but exclude South African public holidays & Mothers Day, Valentines Day etc.
Search “the entertainer” in your app store (its available on all platforms). There’s a free 14 day trial waiting for you but I already know you’re going to want it!
Happy saving!

How does it work for spa treatments? E.g. if I use a massage offer, is the massage discounted and at what rate? The website doesn’t specify.
Hey Ibtisam,
It differs from spa to spa. For example at Sai Gon (Thai Massage in Rivonia) they let me book a consecutive 2 hour slot for myself but I pay for 1 hour & then use the voucher to pay for the 2nd hour – I prefer this.
At another place, Enmasse in Illovo, they were quite insistent that I bring a friend along & their massage would be free – I just pay for mine.
I’ve also heard of instance where spas will issue a voucher so you can back for the 2nd (free) treatment down the line.
So in summary it varies – you can check with the merchant before you book…
