Warsan Shire in Conversation with The Feminist Stokvel

“Give your daughters difficult names. Give your daughters names that command the full use of tongue. My name makes you want to tell me the truth. My name doesn’t allow me to trust anyone that cannot pronounce it right.” ~ Warsan Shire

Oh my God – when I read this for the first time I felt like I loved my name a whole lot more even though I’ve already  been on a journey of becoming ok with it for a few years. That’s years of wishing I was called something more “normal”, like Fatima, Shireen, or Ayesha. I have  grappled with my name, it’s Arabic meaning (not easily/directly translated to English) & why I needed to carry the burden of this one extra thing that made me stand out & different even more.

Yup this is a biggie  & the press release with everything you need to know is below….

For the first time, Word N Sound teams up with Feminist Stokvel, a collective made up of eight writers who create fun, smart, and interactive platforms that high-light a wide array of issues related to black women and feminism. Since its formation one year ago, Feminist Stokvel has successfully hosted four natural Hair Soirees, two film screenings of celebrated directors Ousmane Sembene and Spike Lee’s movies, and a panel on radical self-care featuring accomplished author and academic Dr. Pumla Gqola. The conversation with Warsan Shire features performances by three founding members of the multi-talented Feminist Stokvel. Singer/songwriter Danielle Bowler will share the stage alongside poets Nova Masango and Lebo Mashile.

The poet was born in Kenya to Somali parents and moved to London at the age of 12. Today, she travels the world as a touring poet, masterfully working with subjects like love, loss, identity, war, and gender in her writing. Warsan Shire’s trip to South Africa forms part of the SA-UK Season, a cultural exchange programme that has seen British and South African artists crisscrossing both worlds to share their crafts and cultures in 2015.

Word N Sound is hosting a conversation between the incomparable Warsan Shire and Feminist Stokvel on Wednesday, 7 October at Keleketla Library, situated at 6 Verway Street in Troyeville.

Don’t miss this landmark event for spoken word fans. Book tickets via Quicket.

Entry is R100 and R50 for students. Doors open at 18:30 for 19:00. For queries email: feministstokvel@gmail.com

And…  We have recently reached an agreement with a taxi driver to provide transport for those who are keen on attending the  event but transport is a challenge. In partnership with Musawenkosi Transport, we are offering transport to and from Keleketla Library for R25. The taxi will have two pick-up and drop-off stops, Park Station and Wits Arts Museum in Braamfontein. To RSVP for transport, buy a ticket and then email Feminist Stokvel (feministstokvel@gmail.com) the proof of payment so that we are able to confirm the number of people that we need to organise transport for. This must be done no later than Monday, 5th October at 18:00. The minimum requirement is 12 people as that is the number of passengers a Quantum minibus can take. The transport arrangement is completely dependent on the demand for it.

In coconut oil we trust,
Feminist Stokvel
