I’d only ever been to the very 1st Market on Main when it launched some 2 years ago, so when I heard that the 100th market was coming up, I thought it due time to check it out again. We went mainly to attend the I Art Joburg Exhibition but decided to check out the rest of the events while we were there.
It was just like I remembered from that 1st market: really full & I could tell from how far we needed to park. I love the city & seeing it come alive especially at night, makes my heart swell (yes, yes its safe!). There was live music, a lighting installation on Kruger Street & a performance by visual artist Marcus Neustetter on Fox Street which we had just missed 🙁 However, the night market was by far the busiest of all the events of the night…
Pancakes, they were calling my name from a mile 🙂
Packed to capacity! But a great vibe…
We almost missed the upstairs section altogether, where there was a really cool interactive exhibition about the Maboneng journey & their inspiring plans that lies ahead. I’m still amazed at this space that Jonathan Lieberman & his team have carved out in the city. Currently The Maboneng Precinct already gets 1000 visitors a day! You can still catch the exhibition as it will run until 8 November at Arts on Main, after which it will move to the Main Street Life entrance gallery.
The newly opened Cocoon In the City was also there offering short massages.
After much searching, hubby found his happy place – coffee (served by Doubleshot from Juta Street in Braamfontein), a nice quiet spot where we took a break from the crowds.
The new information (or informotion) centre for the Maboneng Precinct – built inside a container! A necessary addition with the rapid development of the area I think.
I left a little deeper in love with Jozi than when I arrived, just like I knew I would. All in all a great night out & the market’s popularity hasn’t faded a tad!
