My dream machine – the Asus Zenbook Prime

I’ve been lusting about buying my dream laptop, the Asus Zenbook Prime since at least the 27th April 2012. I know because so madly in lust with this machine was I, that I took pictures of it in-store on my cell phone & that’s when the pics are dated. When it comes to gadgets, phone & tablets are usually top of my list so I really surprised myself by wanting this.

I already had a netbook and a laptop & I really wanted something in between that I’d use mainly for blogging (& just generally being online), so an ultrabook was the natural choice since I needed it to be very portable but still pack quite a punch. Also, it has to be a Windows machine.

I can’t say for sure what pushed me over the edge & made me buy it almost a year on but I woke up one Sunday morning & decided it was time that I had an Asus Zenbook. in my life.

There are few things as sweet as unboxing a new gadget

Basic specs:

  • 13.3 inch screen
  • Backlit keyboard (great for blogging in bed)
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 128 GB SSD (SSD = solid state drive/disk – I asked! Put simply the Asus Zenbook is less susceptible to physical shock (accidents happen!), are much quieter, boots up instantly & lags a whole lot less)
  • Windows 7 (upgradeable to Windows 8 online for R125, which of course I did & rather painlessly)

What’s in the box? Well, quite a lot…

Soooo sleek…

Truth be told, every angle is her good side…

  • It’s beautiful! Call me shallow but aesthetics mean a lot to me. It’s a full brushed aluminium body (no plastic in sight)
  • The HD  display is amazing
  • Bang & Olufsen speakers – yes really! The sound is amazing (& I’m not even really into music).

  • The battery life is really good. When I’m out with the machine for the day I don’t need to take the charger along at all.
  • It came with some accessories in the box that with other brands you may have to buy. My favourite is the maroon sleeve, so, so sleek!
  • It’s pretty easy to pop the Asus Zenbook into its sleeve & then into my handbag – got to love that!

  • Honestly nothing but if pressed the only thing I’d change if you gave me an option is the memory (128GB) but obviously I’d already made peace with it before I purchased. Also then it wouldn’t be as thin & compact etc. Nothing an external hard drive couldn’t sort out.

Frugal tip: I managed to knock at least a third off the price through a combination of a trade in deal (Incredible Connection had a promo running so I gave up my netbook in exchange for a R1500 discount), some mall vouchers we happened to have & a the Discovery Vitality cashback program.

She insists on going everywhere with me…

If I ran the brand

  • I’d be pretty pleased with myself – the Asus Zenbook leaves little to be desired except perhaps the price at R14 999 (catch your breath back).

Need to know

  • The Asus Zenbook also comes in an 11 inch option if you want something a bit smaller
  • It doesn’t have a disk drive but in the 3 weeks that I’ve had it, I haven’t needed one.
  • The machine comes with a standard 2 year warranty but I decided to take out an extended warranty for an additional R200 just to be safe.

The track pad took some getting used to but I found a tutorial on the desktop that cleared it all up in a second. About a week after having the Asus Zenbook, I needed to go back onto my old laptop (which by the way served me well & I never had an issued with!). I found it so heavy, the screen pixellated & just generally frumpy & slow – I know how spoilt am I?!?

The Asus Zenbook is an investment, my dream machine & an investment in my blog. I won’t be buying a pc of any sorts for a good couple of years!
