It’s been a busy week, but something happened this week that I don’t want to even dare gloss over. Voting for The Big Blog Exchange closed (with an additional day’s grace added to the deadline) & right after, the 100 finalists worldwide were announced. The competition ran for 45 days, attracting 1173 blogs from all round the world, generating 90 000 votes for individual bloggers, 26 000 Facebook likes & an audience of 2.5 million on Twitter – the largest blogging competition in history & some of the most brilliant marketing I’ve seen.
I made it 🙂 Check all the other South Africans who did too! Check out the full list of the 100 finalists here.
I’m school girl excited to let you know (if you haven’t already heard me squealing with excitement) that Wiscellaneous has made the top 100 finalists! Eek! The top 100 blogs that are finalists are chosen from the top 25 blogs in each of the 4 regions:
- Africa & Middle East
- Asia Pacfic
What’s the prize?
So many people have asked me this & I love telling the story because the prizing is beyond cool! In the words of The Big Blog Exchange themselves:
Originating in 1932, Hostelling International (the sponsor) has 80 years’ experience in ensuring global interaction, especially amongst the younger generation – however, we are now looking to modernise this worldwide community by inviting 16 bloggers to take part in a unique exchange, which takes place both online and in real life. For ten days simultaneously (7th June – 17th June 2013), the selected bloggers will take part in the opportunity of a lifetime, swapping lives, places and blogs with another talented blogger
So what happens next?
As I type, an international jury is convening to select 14 blogs from the top 100. In an exciting twist, a further 2 blogs that didn’t make the final 100 will also be chosen to give smaller blogs a chance too – love that! The 16 winners will then be announced on the 29th April at 7am GMT – yes, I’ve diarised it!
Proudly South African
I mentioned this before, but it’s important. 20 of the overall top 100 blogs are from SA compared to a total of 8 from the US! That’s a HUGE deal considering that blogging is hugely underdeveloped (& generally under supported) locally. The Big Blog Exchange has connected me to so many blogs around the world & right here in SA that I may easily have missed otherwise. I’m an even prouder South African today!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I’m stunned & happy that my bog has made it this far. Of course I want to win & go further, that’s the point. But I want to take a moment to thank to everyone who not only voted for me but has supported my blog in any way since I started it. I almost forgot that Wiscellaneous is just a year old this month & I wouldn’t have guessed when I 1st published my 1st post that I’d have learned so much & had this much fun a year on.
It feels like thank you isn’t enough but I really do appreciate it through & through!
