Tribeca Standard – a little substandard…

In Pretoria for the day on Saturday, I decided to make the most of it and have a long, late lazy lunch at a favourite spot, Tribeca Standard. I actually frequent their other branch, Tribeca Brooklyn more but when we arrived they were closed for renovations (and I really wanted their sweet corn fritters so badly!).

Luckily Tribeca Standard (their hot younger sister) isn’t too far away,  but the menu (and look) is entirely different…

Step into Tribeca Standard and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a café off the streets on New York or even Europe. With what feels like triple volume ceilings, there’s a lot of old world touches that I love like leather seats, lots of wood and dark colours that pulls you in on a cosy Winters day. It’s like old meets new in this trendy spot that always buzzing every time that I’ve been. Versus their Brooklyn store, Tribeca Standard is meant to be a little more polished and it is but I don’t think it’s lost the laid back vibe at all…

  • I ordered the mushroom tart tatin which is an upside down mushroom tart with a herb side salad and skinny fries. It was amazing! The pastry was light and beautiful and the pan-fried wild mushrooms were creamy & flavourful but not too rich. Oh and the salad and fries were on point too.
  • The coffee (though I didn’t have any on this particular day, sacrilege I know…) is faultless. No surprise then if you didn’t already know that TriBeCa supply all the Woolies Cafés with coffee too…

  • The décor. I could go on  & on…
  • The service is efficient and a step above the average we’re used to…

  • My partner in crime on this day ordered the duck pizza and was really disappointed. The other toppings included gooseberry preserve, mozzarella and spring onion and in her words “there was just something missing”. I knew she was grasping at straws when she ordered some chilli to help add some flavour but it really couldn’t be saved…

If I ran the place

  • I would add their sweet corn fritters to the Tribeca Standard menu. They’re that good…

Need to know

You can download Tribeca Standard‘s full menu here (I love it when restaurants have their menu available online!).

I’m going to put the pizza down a bit of a wobbly since this isn’t the first time that I’ve eaten with them and everything has been fine up to now. There’s still loads I want to try on their menu like the salt and pepper prawn starter and the spicy bean salad so I won’t leave it too long before I make my next trip out to Pretoria.

Oh & there’s hoping that Tribeca Brooklyn’s revamp is done quickly, I’m still craving those sweet corn fritters 😉

PS I had breakfast at another Pretoria spot Lucky Bread Company earlier this day which I loved! If you missed that post, check it out here.
