Detour Espresso Bar – coffee with a view

Marck Barter is living the dream.  He works around 5 hours a day and surfs for the rest of the day. In his own words “I start serving coffee at 7 and by 12:30 I’m in the water”.

And then he has this for an office…

We were taking a peninsula drive when we spotted one of Cape Town’s many food trucks and when we saw it was a coffee truck, stopping wasn’t optional.

Marck tells us he spent some 25 years  in Canada but just couldn’t stay away from South Africa & particularly Cape Town. He looks like a beachy version of the Marlboro Man with his sun burnt skin, cowboy hat, his dog sleeping in the sun and his surfboard visible in his bakkie parked nearby.

He serves up over 100 cups every morning and the bulk of his trade is between 7 & 9 am from commuters wanting a convenient & quick stop off. Tired of the rat race, Marck says he made a conscious decision to “make a life & not a living” and has scaled down his life to enable him to do what he loves most – to surf. We order a coffee & a tea (he serves Dilmah) and grab a seat to soak up some Winter sun…

Oh & the coffee is pretty good too…

Talk about living the dream!
