Lacuna’s new menu over a private dinner with a Pussycat Doll

If you’re a regular on my blog you’ll know that I’ve already raved about the food at The Maslow here, here, here and here. So you can understand that I went along to last night’s event with the highest expectations.

The private dining room is in the far corner of Lacuna (The Maslow’s restaurant), closest to the kitchen. I love that it opens up to the garden…

The Maslow, with Chef Dallas Orr (previously from the Table Bay Hotel) have launched their new menu and we had a 6 tasting course in the company of Kaya Jones (and her very cute mum), founding member of Pussycat Dolls in the restaurant’s private dining room (who knew they had one?).

I’ve been to The Maslow plenty privately as well as for events and it’s hard to believe they only opened up their doors in January this year. Separately, I love the monochromatic colour scheme that greets you as you walk in & it still takes me by surprise a little every time…

I love these events for the opportunity to meet other bloggers and tweeps. This is Le1ghlo with Chef Dallas Orr and Kaya.

What did we eat? Lots…

We started with a shot of Cream of Cauliflower soup, which is actually an item from the Winter menu. Sorry I ate it before I could shoot a pic 🙂 I will say that it actually didn’t look like much but blew me away! It was thick & creamy – who knew cauliflower could taste that good?!

Beetroot & goats cheese salad – roasted baby beetroot salad, goats cheese brulee, with walnut pesto

For perspective my “meat and potatoes” husband kept nudging me to ask if I was going to finish mine. The combinations of textures and flavours were amazing. This pic really doesn’t do it justice…

Prawn Laksa

This is an Asian soup that’s a combination of sweet, sour & salty all rolled into one. At the bottom of the dish, which you can’t see in here are fine noodles (like vermicelli). There are so many flavours in your mouth it feels like your brain can’t process it all. Total winner.

Roasted salmon on wilted Greens with Horseradish Mustard Sauce

I actually tweeted The Maslow and Cheff Orr in the afternoon to say I hope there was salmon on the menu because they do it so, so well. If you have nothing else, it needs to be the salmon…

Roast Chicken supreme with Sautéed Potato & Grilled Corn Puree

This is probably the only dish I was indifferent to on this night…

Tonka Bean Panna Cotta

Tonka beans are South America’s version of the vanilla bean Chef Dallas let us know. I discovered panna cotta very late in life (last year to be exact) & I don’t see it on a lot of menus so if it’s there it’s definitely what ‘m going to order. I love that this wasn’t a stereotypical sweet dessert & that a lot of work goes into it like the strawberries that are poached overnight & allowed to drip…

Celebs instagram their drinks too 🙂

Kaya was incredibly sweet and very personable, wanting to know more about us than talk out herself. She talked so frankly about life, love & the industry &  how she was discovered by R Kelly at the age of 13! We hung onto her every word. She was so comfortable that she’d literally kicked her shoes off by the end of the night (my kinda girl).

Ninellara & Kaya pulling faces 🙂

Albeit impromptu, this was a fab night out all round…

While this was just a tasting, all of Lucana’s menus are available online here (love that!). You can also catch Chef Dallas at the Taste of Joburg from today through to Sunday along with 11 other of Jozi’s top restaurants – go hungry!

It’s 04:52am as I finish up writing this. Night night (or good morning by the time you read this)!
