I first heard about THE WKND SOCIAL a few months ago when I met one of the organizers, Nandi quite by chance at another event. Now Jozi has enough pop up foodie events if you ask me but I knew right away I wanted to check this one out but with life being what it is I just didn’t get there. So when I recently got an invite from Sunglass Hut to join the last one it felt like nothing short of divine intervention.
In their own words, The WKND SOCIAL is a monthly brunch and day party event about good food, good people and good music. Hosted by The Other Girls: Thith, Vie, Tumi, Nandi, Stephanie & Thando, each month’s event has a mood board (dress codes are so old!) and 2 parts: PART 1: THE WKND SOCIAL
A pre-sold limited attendance event that takes place from 11:00 to 15:00. This covers your food, bottomless cocktails (plenty of non alcoholic ones too) as well as entry into the second part of the event THE WKND SOCIAL AFTER PARTY.
PART 2: THE WKND SOCIAL AFTER PARTY
In a nutshell, this is where everyone dances their lunch off till around 21:00 instead of having a nap. Expect a DJ and tickets are pre-sold online at a reduced price, or at the door.
I think that prices vary slightly from event to event depending on the venue, menu & DJ line up etc. but on this day to give you an idea it would have cost R300 for THE WKND SOCIAL (including the WKND SOCIAL AFTER PARTY) and R50 if you just wanted to come to THE WKND SOCIAL AFTER PARTY.
Ladies & men’s mood board for the September event (hilarious but I’m only seeing these for thr 1st time now as I write this post, lol!)
The venue was King Kong in Troyeville (less than 3km’s from home for me & I’d never been there before), usually a club. I love, love, love finding new spots in the city and when it’s a rooftop venue it’s such a score!
Macaroons as a starter was a first but it actually worked. For mains they catered really well for meat eaters, grazers (vegetarians) and pescetarians as well. I had to dash really early so I didn’t get to dig in though. I loved that desert was available on demand from early on in the day & I really liked the strawberry soft serve with meringue (I’d never had this combo before – really good).
The weather was really showing off on this Sunday. It was a stunner of a day to be out & I left 2 shades darker and peeling after just 3 hours – fabulous!
Here’s a short video clip I almost forgot I shot. So now you’ll understand why the slogan was “come and play”. We tried on heaps of sunglasses, pouted and posed. Some people played cards, others swing tennis but we all soaked up the sun.
THE WKND SOCIAL is a heap of fun, exceptional value & a totally laid back way to spend a day – it really doesn’t get more chilled than this. I’ve heard that tickets sell out quickly, so the best way to keep up with them and secure your seat is to join their mailing list by emailing info@thewkndsocial with the subject line: Please add me on the list.
