Sunday Gourmet Braai at The Maslow

You may have noticed that I didn’t touch much on one aspect of our stay at The Maslow in my last post and that’s the food. Yup, it needed an entire dedicated post of its own. The very 1st time I went to The Maslow a few months back at the end of last Summer, the hubby had booked us in for their Sunday Music Sessions (a lazy, slow afternoon lunch with live entertainment).

Well its Summer again and this time they’re doing the Sunday Gourmet Braai instead, keeping with the live entertainment and swapping the food out for a South African institution – braai.

Taking in the entertainment…

We had some errands to run so after we had checked in we left for a bit and got back late afternoon and found the buffet still fully stocked and the braai going strong.

  •  There’s a lot of choice. On the meat side there’s (brace yourself) BBQ chicken with roasted pepper & sweet corn salsa, lamb koftas, spare ribs, oxtail pot, seafood paella and a baked catch (fish) of the day …
  • The lamb koftas were my favourite & I don’t even really like red meat. Not sure what’s in it  but there’s a hint of sweetness – love!
  • The hubby’s favourite was the caramelized onion with blue cheese and gorgonzola pear – this from someone who “doesn’t do vegetarian” 🙂

  • The salads and side dishes is really where the “gourmet” bit comes in. I liked that it wasn’t the usual potato salad etc. that I could whip up myself at home. Instead they had a 3 cheese potato bake on offer
  • I really enjoyed the chilled vibes in Lacuna. Totally laid back & really the perfect way to end a week…

  • Just one thing the hubby missed on the buffet – sausage/boerewors…

Lacuna Bistro

I like the inside/outside feel of Lacuna, especially if you get a table close to the window

20131006_173252_1  The lush gardens make you forget for a second that you’re in the middle of Sandton…

It was 33 degrees so we asked to have our dessert out at the pool & people watch…

Sunset from our suite’s private balcony…

Even dessert (at which point I should have stopped eating long ago) came with 4 options: traditional lemon tart, trifle, warm malva pudding with amarula custard & black forest swiss roll. I managed to squeeze the latter in 🙂

If I rand the place

  • I wouldn’t change a thing. I never would have thought a fancy hotel would have braai o the menu. Love the idea, it feels so authentically South African and the gourmet twist makes it…

Need to know

  • The Sunday Gourmet Braai runs from 1pm to 5pm every Sunday and costs R250 pp – incredible value for what’s on offer considering it’s a buffet.
  • The music is can be a little loud so grab a table further to the back if you’re planning to chat lots.

Go hungry and go early!

As mention in my last post The Maslow has decided I should be the only one to be spoilt so do check back for quite a surprise in the next few days 🙂
