Level Four Restaurant at 54 on Bath

Let me start by saying I have at least 2 dozen (maybe 3!) foodie posts outstanding & I’ll be getting them up as fast as I possibly can. The fact that I can’t blog as fast as I eat is a very real problem 🙂

We had some celebrating to do and after some research I decided to give Level Four at the (newish) 54 on Bath in Rosebank a go. In case you’re not from Jozi the hotel was previously called The Grace & was taken over by the Tsosgo Sun group giving it the swanky overhaul we see today.

I made the booking as a surprise for my hubby so I asked for a nice quiet table. Oh & please excuse the flashy pics – the lighting was low.

  • They serve Karan beef, which is halaal so this really swayed me as my Mr really enjoys his red meat.

  • The steak arrived medium rare as we ordered  – 8 out of 10 times restaurants don’t get this right, so I was pleasantly surprised.
  • The service was good. Attentive but not overbearing – just the right balance.

  • We did indeed get that quiet table. In fact we were the only ones in the entire restaurant. All. Night. Long. I decided to believe that it was kind of romantic but if I’m honest, the place lacked a bit of ambience.

We stuck to seafood for the starters…

The red meat in your choice of cut: ribeye; fillet; t-bone; sirloin on the bone. Also come with a choice of side & sauce…

Mixed forest mushroom risotto (came with a side of veg)

Valrhona Guanaja 70% chocolate fondant, berry compote and peanut ice-cream

Trio of crème brûlée; vanilla, lemongrass and milk chocolate

So what did we make of the food? In a nutshell, it wasn’t bad but none of the dishes were special either. Ok if I’m fair my hubby liked the home made ice cream quite a bit and I hoped for the same (I have a thing for  crème brĂ»lĂ©e) but I really didn’t enjoy it & only had a taste. Everything else was ok – somewhere in between & not up to the fine dining/special occasion experience I was hoping for…

Obligatory ‘fro pic 🙂 Definitely go early & have a drink in the lounge/bar – it’s beautiful..

Need to know

That said I have heard that there have been some changes at Level Four. Not sure the extent & if that means the menu/the chef’s been changed but it sounds like things could potentially be looking up… Their menus are all available online which is a great touch few restaurants bother with.

If I ran the place

For the price, the food needs fixing!

If you’ve been to Level Four lately let me know what you thought?
