Months (probably going on a year!) in the planning, it feels more than a little surreal that the Healthy Hair Indaba has come and gone in what feels like an instant.
Warning: If you weren’t at the Motions Hair Academy this past Saturday I hope you were laying on private, deserted island sipping something exotic because you’re about to have some major FOMO…
That’s us – the Healthy Hair Gurus!
It was a FULL house!
The Healthy Hair Indaba has truly been a labour of love. We put a lot of work in (& had a lot of fun!) crafting this day. Our aim was to create a platform to share information about healthy hair be that natural, weaves, braids, relaxed – i.e. all hair so the event was very definitely meant to be inclusive. We were shocked (in a good way) when tickets sold out in around a week & suddenly we found ourselves counting down the weeks, days and then hours!
Did I mention that we were SOLD OUT? 🙂
We started with welcome drinks & registration in the Motions Hair Academy (a hairdressing training school)’s beautiful foyer. I’d only discovered the venue in the last few months and it is gorgeous! Think a stained glass dome, double volume ceilings, wooden doors & frames and interesting art by way of graffiti on the walls. It was an intimate session with around 60 ladies and a further 20 media & sponsors in the room…
Just to give you a quick idea about what we talked about on the day:
- Our own personal hair journeys as the Healthy Hair Gurus
- Hair myths (e.g. black hair doesn’t grow etc.)
- Our personal hair philosophies (mine is “be kind to your hair!”)
- Common hair problems (e.g. breakage, dryness, traction alopecia & more)
We had a short comfort break, filled our tummies with some yummy snacks and then came back to talk hair solutions:
- Product ingredients 101
- Hair handling
- Caring for your daughter’s hair
At the beginning of the session Carice and Kavuli also did 2 styling demos (twist outs, one on a TWA) that was revealed right at the end of the session once the model had sat under the dryer.
I liked that the session was super interactive (thanks for all the questions) and felt more like all of us sharing knowledge amongst each other. Honestly we could have gone on for hours…
Oh & the goodie bag was quite a hit. And here’s why…
Over R1600’s worth of curated items all hand-picked by your Healthy Hair Gurus! Talk about spoilt!
And there’s more…
In addition to the ah-mazing goodie bag we also gave away 30 prizes worth over R14 000. That means almost every second person left with a prize – insane!
Our amazing sponsors – thanks for believing in us & getting behind the #HHI14 in such a big way! Special mention to Motions and our media partner True Love Hair – you guys rock!
We had great help on the day from family & friends – I’m not going to mention names in case I forget someone. You all know who you are – huge thanks!
Thanks for all the feedback on the #HHI14 so far. It wasn’t perfect and we’ve noted comments around parking, sound etc. and we’ll be using this to make the next event an even bigger success.
It was a fabulous day all round! But don’t take my word for it, here are some reviews you can checkout from attendees:
One of our key goals for the day – we trended on Twitter!!!
We also got a mention in The Citizen on page 8 of Monday’s paper and online…
Carice got a chance to chat to Redi Tlabi on Radio 702 yesterday – you can listen to the podcast for some useful hair tips…
Also keep a lookout for us on an upcoming episode of The Link on SABC at 6pm on Wednesdays!
If you attended, please do keep the feedback coming , we so, so value it!
Be kind to your hair!
