Less than a week ago I was that person saying ‘Winter, what Winter?’ as I lounged around in a t shirt and made a mental note to take our electric blankets off. So I’m sorry Joburg, I jinxed it, I’m sorryyyyyyyy. I don’t know what the heck happened but in the last 2/3 days but Winter’s definitely come to tell Jozi she ain’t done with us yet. Not even nearly!!!
But, but, but…. I have found a little solace even in these soups from Woolies Cafe – and completely by accident. I was with a friend and we were looking for a quick place to sit down and have a chat so we ended up at WCafe. I wasn’t quite hungry but I was telling myself I should have something because I wouldn’t have a chance for a good few hours.
I’m actually not a soup person because I didn’t like the kind of soup I grew up with at home – it was kind of like a version of haleem (a vegetable broth with chunks of meat on the bone, mostly served in Ramadaan). I wasn’t down with it, but you know you know, you don’t exactly have a choice when you’re a kid so… So ya, my soup scars are real!
I know you already know that Woolies makes pretty amazing soups both fresh and tinned – I’ve probably had almost all of them by now, but, but, but…. I need you to understand that the Woolies Cafe soups are just next level!!!! I ordered the lentil curry soup that day and it was amazing! It came topped with toasted coconut shavings and fresh coriander and oh em gee guys!!!
Since then I’ve gone back to try all the soups – there’s also roasted red pepper and minestrone and they are all really, really so yum but the lentil curry is still my favourite. It’s a really hearty portion & comes with a slice of toasted bread of your choice with butter and for R39. I don’t even think you could get a McMeal for that money!

I happen to be friendly with the WCafe manager at Rosebank (hey Prince!) and I was obviously gushing about this soup. He mentioned that they make it fresh and from scratch in store – even making their own stock!
Keep warm and eat alla the soup!
