Reubens is in Joburg guys!

…and thats basically what I wanted to know. I’m not going to do (another) full review because I’ve already done two, here and here (can you tell I’m a stan?!). Reubens remains a firm favourite of ours so much so that its become our ritual to make it our first meal when we get into Cape Town. In an industry that lacks diversity so badly, its really cool to see Chef Reuben Riffel, from such humble beginnings not just do his thing but be so damn good it at it too. I’ve been lucky to meet him once or twice and he is also just generally a super nice and down to earth guy.

I could have screamed when I saw the article announcing their imminent opening a few months ago and then somehow I totally forgot about it. I’ve been nagging Reuben to open in Jhb for years now (sorry Reuben but I am glad it worked!) and pretty much gave up that it would ever happen. (Listen to me, making it sound like me & Reuben are besties, looooool!).

A planned a little surprise date night and next thing I know we’re pulling up at Reubens at the Capital Hotel Moloko. We got there on the 1st available slot he could get A later told me – this was on the third day of their opening, on a Friday night – and apparently we had just missed Chef Reuben himself.

We laughed and laughed when our waiter recognised us from the Franschhoek branch – what are the chances?! Also, it makes you realise how serious they take service, flying waiters up to Jhb to ensure diners get the usual standard we’ve grown accustomed to!

Is the food as good as Cape Town? Hells yes!

One day, maybe I might be able to have something other than the chilli salted squid for starters but not anytime soon. Its just p-h-e-n-o-m-e-n-a-l and and I jokingly DMed Chef Reuben that I need it to be on the menu as a main (because I need more!) and he agreed to do it just for me! đŸ™‚

Creme brûlée

I stand to be corrected, but our three course meal for two, including a big sparkling water to share and 1 cappuccino came to a little over R1000, so more a special occasion kind of place but so worth the treat. There’s also a cigar lounge and wine cellar (still being completed when we visited) and Chef Reuben’s cookbooks are on sale too.
