What do you get someone who already has everything for their birthday?
The answer should be nothing (surely my work is done here!?!). This task gets harder & harder every year & this year with hubby’s birthday looming & my trademark procrastination, mild panic set in. I’m a firm believer in outsourcing so I decided to make it someone else’s problem & I called up Bean There, his favouritist coffee shop in Jozi &
asked pleaded for advice.
Bean There at 44 Stanley in Milpark
Enter Cuth & Sarah from Bean There. After some to-&-fro on email (& just a few days left before D-day, my nerves!) they came up with a brilliant idea & something totally unique that even they hadn’t done before – a guided coffee tour of some of Jozi’s best roasteries.
Sheer. And. Utter. Relief.
I love the clean, minimalist decor at Bean There.
So I duped him into an early birthday breakfast on the day at Salvation Cafe at 44 Stanley, followed by (as is our routine when we’re in the area) a coffee at Bean There. And that’s when Cuth appeared at our table out of nowhere & announced the surprise to the birthday boy. And surprised he was!
I could tell he was in coffee-snob heaven from the get-go! I left him in Cuth’s capable hands for the day & ran off to get the rest of the birthday plans prepped but I did join in halfway through to see how things were going.
Bean There‘s flat white (much like a cappuccino). This latte art is beautiful – they make it look so easy!
Oh & if you havent been to Bean There‘s coffee cupping evenings you should have a massive case of FOMO. Book here.
The first stop of day was the nearby Doubleshot in Juta Street, Braamfontein.
I love this little store & they take coffee (& tea) very seriously. Sourced from Malawi, Doubleshot has its vision set firmly “on creating simply a magnificent coffee and tea experience for discerning clientele”. Take a book along & grab a seat in the window. This is the kind of place you can get lost in for hours…
And it’s in Braamies – bonus! Yes, I’m biased, but Jozi CBD will always have a special place in my heart.
4th Avenue Roasters is one we’ve passed by heaps but never thought to try.
Better known as “legendary pink” to locals (go visit & you’ll see why) 4th Avenue Roasters is a gourmet cafe & boutique roastery in the trendy Parkhurst neighbourhood. I love the vibe of this cafe that spills over onto the sidewalk. Their speciality is 100% Arabica hand-roasted coffee served to you in their secret house blend.
It was easy to see that Cuth (who studied marine biology!) was obviously very well-known in the industry from the warm reception she received at all the roasteries visited.
The Foundry is the new kid on the block & already making waves.
The Foundry is the latest addition to Parktown North having opened sometime in September. Better know for its food, it’s not often you see a restaurant with its own roastery on-site too. The reviews I’ve heard so far have been really good both on account of the food & the service. Definitely on my to-do list for dinner soon!
Stil. Coffee is another newbie was the discovery of the day.
Out in the new Northlands shopping centre just off Witkoppen in Northriding Stil. Coffee is much more than a roastery & their premises are huge. They also offer barista training, coffee consulting services (who knew!) & will deliver directly to your door. They can even make you a private blend whereby they’ll source, roast & distribute an exclusive blend that is 100% unique to you.
Cuth delivered a happy (& rather buzzing after 6 cups) birthday boy back to me by the afternoon (big thank you!). He says it was the best birthday gift ever & I might have believed him if he didn’t say that every year 😉
Soooooo any ideas for 2013 – I’m starting early – the stress is too much! Don’t worry he doesn’t read my blog so it won’t leak 🙂
