Reuben’s – the best meal of my life

I first ate at Reuben’s in Franschhoek 3 years ago and I’ve made them a pit stop on every trip down to Cape Town since. Yup this post is beyond overdue but Reuben’s is so, so good it’s really hard to find any words that’ll do justice to the experience…

The food is delectably flavourful without being pretentious. It feels like Reuben’s  takes simple ingredients and just makes them burst with taste in every bite.



  • I really haven’t had a bad or even a mediocre meal at Reuben’s yet – and that’s in over 5 or 6 trips to date. Everything he does is exceptional. And yes, in my mind Reuben Riffel himself is back in the kitchen preparing every course of my meal!



  • The menu changes regularly so you can be sure there’ll always be something new to tempt your taste buds.
  • Rueben’s supports the Street Smart initiative whereby R5 is added to every bill at the restaurant and the money is distributed to charities that work with under privileged children – what an easy way to give back!

  • That I have to travel 1400+ kms to get my fill! Can we please have a Reuben’s in Jozi? I don’t ask for much, see?

Starting out in the building trade with his dad, Reuben Riffel’s story has all the makings to tug at your heart strings. Working his way up from being a waiter, Reuben quickly made a name for himself. After graduating to running the kitchen at a restaurant in Cambridge, England he returned to open his own restaurant in his hometown and so Reuben’s was born. This is a man living and breathing his passion.

If I ran the place

I would open in Jhb, asap (I may mentioned this before!) – I can’t deal with the withdrawal symptoms and Im counting down to month end trip to the Cape!

Confession – we were so excited about the dessert that we devoured it before we could remember to take a picture – true story! I was in stitches for minutes after – of course I blame my husband!

Need to know

Reuben’s is open for lunch and dinner & booking is must (don’t even try!). They now have a second branch in the swanky One & Only hotel on the Waterfront too (where all the pics in this blog were taken) although Franschhoek always makes for such a beautiful drive.
